Declaration of Civil Status

Declaration of Civil Status

What is a Declaration of Civil Status?

A Declaration of Civil Status is a type of Statutory Declaration specifically for people who want to get married.

It acts as proof that the signatory has not been married before, or that they are no longer married. It is similar to a Certificate of No Impediment, but it is for use in the UK, not abroad.

If you want to get married abroad, you will likely be asked to instead provide a Certificate of No Impediment, or a different type of Statutory Declaration.

How do I get a Declaration of Civil Status?

Just like any other Statutory Declaration, you will either need to write it yourself, or have someone else draft your declaration for you.

It may be best to get someone else to draft it for you, such as a legal expert. This ensures that your declaration of civil status is as accurate as possible and includes all of the necessary information, so that you can get married without any issues.

Why you need a Notary Public

A Notary Public has the legal expertise to assist you with the drafting of your declaration of civil status.

Additionally, your declaration will require someone to act as a witness to you signing the declaration, so as to ensure that if anyone disputes your declaration, they can say when and where you signed your document. They also verify that you are the one signing the declaration.

Our own Notary Public of England and Wales, Nathan Woodcock, can assist you with both the drafting of your Declaration of Civil Status, as well as witness it for you.

To meet our notary, you can book an appointment to take place at one of our offices in London, Manchester, or Sheffield. However, you can also use our mobile notary service to meet our notary at a suitable place, and a reasonable time. For example, your home or office.

For those who need help with drafting, or getting a witness for their declaration of civil status, get in touch with us. We can help you.
