Notarisation of ID and proof of address

Notarisation of ID and proof of address

When you might need your ID and proof of address notarised

Alongside the notarisation of whatever documents you plan on using abroad, such as a power of attorney, you may also need to go through the process of notarisation of ID and proof of address.

Other situations where you might need to get your identity documents notarised include:

  • Opening bank accounts abroad
  • Get a visa for another country
  • Get your pension whilst you are abroad, e.g with a certificate of life

What counts as ID that can be notarised?

Some of the documents you can use as proof of identity are:

  • Driving licence
  • Passport copy (usually just the ID page, but you may also need certain pages or the whole passport notarised)
  • ID card (e.g a BRP card)

Your ID must include a photo of you. This means that you cannot use a birth certificate as proof of your identity.

What counts as proof of address that can be notarised?

Not just any document with your address on can act as proof of address. There are some useful documents that you should keep in mind to act as your proof of address. The more recent they are, the better.

Documents that are good as proof of address include:

  • Utility bills
  • Bank statements
  • Driving licence (only if you are not using it as proof of ID, and you know it will be accepted)

Why you need a Notary Public for notarisation of ID and proof of address

If you need to go through the notarisation of ID and proof of address, then it is likely that you are already using the services of a notary. In this case, you will understand the important and unique role that a Notary Public plays in ensuring that your documents are ready for use abroad.

If this is not the case, then it is important to know that no one else can do what a Notary Public can do. Only a notary can notarise documents for you, no normal solicitor can do this.

Our registered Notary Public of England and Wales, Nathan Woodcock, can do all of this for you.

Additionally, we can assist you with legalisation or with getting an apostille, so that your documents will be accepted in whichever country you plan on going to.

For legalisation, we will manage the whole process of applying for embassy legalisation from your target nation. This process only applies to the countries that do not accept apostilles

For apostilles, we will manage the whole process for you. We do this by working with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to get an apostille for your documents. We offer a standard service that takes 10 to 15 days, and a fast-track service that takes 5 to 7 days.

Anyone who needs our help with their notarisation needs for ID documents, or assistance with legalisation and apostilles, should get in touch today.
