Attestation of documents – the execution and signature of documents

What is the execution and attestation of documents?

Attestation of documents is the process of certifying something through the use of a witness.

For example, the witness can verify that you are the person, or people, who signed your documents and that they were ‘executed’ properly.

The proper execution of documents includes ensuring there are witnesses, that the signatories are who they say they are, and that the date and other details are correct.

Some authorities, particularly ones outside of the UK, ask that you go through the process of attesting to ensure that everything has been done properly.

Documents such as wills always need to have a witness to their signature and execution.

The signature and witnessing of Affidavits and Statutory Declarations will also likely need the signature and execution of the document to be witnessed.

There are even some cases where a witness will need to be witnessed. A notary can act as the witness to a witness in this case. We have a blog about one such situation that can act as an example, the witnessing of a Deed of Conveyance for Trinidad and Tobago.

Why you need a Notary Public

Sometimes, an authority may ask that a Notary Public is present as a witness to attest to the execution and signature of documents.

Nathan Woodcock is our Notary Public of England and Wales, and has helped thousands of clients with their notary needs. He can act as a witness for you and carry out the attestation of documents. He will verify your identity, and attest to the fact your documents have been signed and executed properly.

To get your documents attested by our notary, you can book an appointment at one of our offices, or use our mobile notary service to have your appointment take place at your home, or another suitable location. Our offices are based in London, Manchester, and Sheffield.
