Greek wedding services.

There is something for everyone in Greece, with its beautiful scenery, great food, sunny weather, and rich history. It is no wonder that many people want to have a Greek wedding and spend one of the most special days of their lives there.

If you are planning on joining the list of many happy people who have got married in Greece, then there are many things you will need to consider for your Greek wedding. Alongside the usual things like the choice of venue, how many guests, what to wear and all of the rest, there are some less glamorous but just as important things you will need to think about.

For example, you will need to get some documents ready to take with you so that you can get married in Greece. These documents will need to be notarised and legalised, which is something that we can help you with.

We will take you through some of the important documents that you may need to get ready to take with you, and tell you the ways in which we can help you. For answers to any simple questions you may have, read to the bottom to find our FAQ.

Prove that you can get married

Need a

 Notary Public?

Contact us by phone, email, or website chat, and we will provide a tailored quote based on your document needs.

We can then book your appointment at one of our convenient offices in London, Manchester or Sheffield, or you can take advantage of our mobile notary service at a time and place that suits you.

Before you do anything else, you have to prove that you can get married.

If you are in the UK, you can prove that you are able to get married by getting a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI). This document acts as proof that there is nothing impeding you from marrying your partner, such as already being married to someone else.

To get a CNI, you will need to contact a UK Register Office and inform them you need the certificate to get married in Greece.

Once you have your certificate, it will need to be notarised and legalised by a Notary Public. This is something that our expert Notary Public of England and Wales, Nathan Woodcock, can assist you with.

Although Greece should accept your CNI, please make sure that you contact the local authorities of where you are getting married within Greece, or the person carrying out your wedding, so that you can check if it will be accepted. Also, you should ask how long before the wedding the certificate must be issued.

You and your partner’s names will need to be on the CNI. The name must match the ones on your passports.

Finally, you should also contact the local authorities to see if there are any other documents you will need to provide so that you can get married.

Visit our guide to the Certificate of No Impediment to learn more about this important document.

Other documents that you will need to provide

Whilst the Certificate of No Impediment is important, it is not the only document that you will need to provide for a wedding in Greece.

There are some documents that are mandatory for everyone to take with them if they want a Greek wedding, whilst some will depend on your individual circumstances or what kind of ceremony you are having.

Mandatory documents include:

  • Full birth certificates of you and your partner. These must include your parents’ names
  • Passports
  • Passport sized photos
  • Two passport copies of witnesses for your wedding

Documents that you may need to provide in certain circumstances are:

  • Death certificate of your late spouse if you are widowed
  • Divorce certificate if you have been previously married, but since separated
  • Proof of name change from a court if your name is not the same as your birth name

Regarding the Greek wedding ceremony itself, you will be required to provide some documents depending on what faith you are getting married in, if any at all.

In Greece, you can have an Orthodox wedding, a Catholic and Maronite wedding, a Jewish wedding, or a civil wedding. You can also have a mixed religion ceremony, but not all faiths allow this.

We recommend asking those carrying out your ceremony to see what documents you may need to provide.

Marrying a non-British citizen

If you are marrying a British citizen, then much of the advice in here will apply to them. However, if you are marrying a non-British citizen, then whilst some of the advice here will be relevant, there may be some details that are different.

For example, they may be from a country that does not have a Certificate of No Impediment, but has something similar. They should use this document instead.

Your partner should contact their country’s embassy in Greece to see what extra documents that they may need to provide.
