Notarising a cremation certificate

Notarising a cremation certificate

When a loved one passes and has been cremated, it may be necessary to get their cremation certificate notarised and legalised if you need to use it abroad.

There can be a few reasons why you may need to take it abroad which we will cover later on, as well as what notarisation and legalisation entail and how we can help.

For such an important document, it is vital that you choose a notary who will handle your case with care, whilst ensuring that the cremation certificate is notarised and legalised

What is a cremation certificate?

A cremation certificate is a document that is used to confirm that a person who has passed away has been cremated. It is usually issued to the next of kin of the deceased.

The certificate will include the name of the deceased person, the date of the cremation and the location it took place at.

Normally, cremation certificates are used to not only prove the cremation took place, but also to show that it was done according to all applicable laws and regulations. They can also be used to prove that someone has passed away, though a death certificate will have also been issued that is better for this purpose.

Who issues cremation certificates?

Crematoriums issue cremation certificates with all the relevant details entered once the process has been completed.
The person who arranged the cremation can be the person to whom the certificate is given, though it can also be given to the executor of the deceased’s estate named in their will.

Why might I need to get my certificate notarised?

At times, you may need to take the cremation certificate abroad to assist with settling the affairs of the deceased. To take important documents abroad, they must first be notarised according to the standards of the country you are going to. Notarisation simply proves that the certificate is genuine and that it has been checked by a legal professional.

For example, you may need to take the cremation certificate to prove that the deceased has been cremated along with their wishes outlined in their will.

Other examples include proving that the individual is deceased, which we mentioned earlier on in the blog.

We can assist you with every step of the notarisation process, plus other services that are needed to be able to take your document overseas.

Important services we offer

Notarisation

Although we have already touched on notarisation, we shall go into more detail here. The notary who carries out the notarisation of your documents, will authenticate them as genuine by providing their seal, stamp and signature.

Along with notarisation, there are other services that we offer that you will need to be able to take your cremation certificate abroad.

Legalisation

Legalisation is a particularly important process which is used to prove that a notary’s stamp, seal and signature are real and show that your documents were notarised by an actual qualified notary. It also gives your document equal legal weight to those from the country you are going to.

There are different forms of legalisation depending on which country you are going to. Most countries accept apostilles as a form of legalisation, which is a faster way of doing it. We can handle the process of getting an apostille for you; we offer a standard service and a fast-track service so that you can choose the correct one for your specific timescale.

Other countries will require the longer and more complex embassy and consulate legalisation processes. During this process, your certificate will go through more checks. Like with apostilles, we can manage the process of embassy and consulate legalisation for you.

If you are unsure which process you will need to use, we are here to help by advising you on what will need to be done.

Translation

Finally, your cremation certificate may need to be translated if you are going to a country where English is not used as an official language. This is something that we can arrange for you.
