The Malta Individual Investor Programme

Historically a land of emigration, Malta has seen a significant increase in net migration in recent years. In fact, much of the foreign community in Malta consists of British nationals, who settle in the country either to work, or to enjoy their retirement.

What is the MIIP?

The Maltese Government offers a fast track to citizenship by investment program. Though not a Golden Visa by name, the Malta Individual Investor Programme (MIIP) works in a similar way to many of the Golden Visa schemes across Europe.

Why would you want one?

The scheme targets high net worth applicants who are not citizens of the European Union who wish to start a life in Malta. It is often seen as a good retirement option for UK nationals who are prepared to invest a large sum as part of their retirement plans.

What are the requirements?

If you are interested in applying for Maltese citizenship through this route, you must meet one of the following investment thresholds:

  • You own a home worth at least €700,000 in Malta
  • You rent a home worth at least €16,000 per year
  • Invest €600,000 after 36 months of residency
  • Invest €750,000 after 12 months of residency
  • Donate €10,000 to an organisation approved by the Community Malta Agency, or a registered sport, scientific, cultural, philanthropic or animal welfare organisation

You must also:

  • Have a clean criminal record
  • Be in good health, along with any family members
  • Be at least 18-years-old
  • Have had at least one year residency in Malta
  • Hold a valid residency card

What happens once you have your visa?

The process of receiving Maltese citizenship by investment can generally be completed in just under a year. During the application process, it is often recommended that you start the residency period in order to fulfil the 1-year residency requirement for citizenship.

After citizenship is granted, you will become a EU citizen and, as such, will be able to freely travel the EU as you wish. You will also be able to move to other EU nations.
