The Power of Attorney is a versatile document that can be made for a few different reasons, with there being different versions suitable for various situations. 

For example, they can be used to empower someone to sell property abroad on your behalf if you are unable to travel. 

They can also be used to empower someone to make medical decisions on your behalf if you are unwell, and will not be able to make your own choices in the future.

In the UK, there are two forms of Power of Attorney that are used for the above purposes. These are:

Ordinary Power of Attorney – this is usually used for financial reasons for when you are unavailable to do something yourself, and they are temporary; this type of Power of Attorney lasts until you lose mental capacity.

Lasting Power of Attorney – this is used for more varied situations, which includes health and finances; normally, it is used for in the future when you no longer have mental capacity to make your own decisions.
