What is a Grant of Letters of Administration?

The Grant of Letters of Administration allows an individual to manage the affairs of someone who is recently deceased. It is only used in the event that the deceased did not have a will, or did not name any executors in their will. We have a blog where you can learn more about the Grant of Letters of Administration.

If the deceased did have a will with named executors, then the executors will need to get a Grant of Probate certificate instead.

We offer a few Grant of Letters of Administration services that you can make use of.

How to get a Grant of Letters of Administration

Only one of the deceased’s next of kin can apply to be the administrator of their estate.

You will have to use the Government’s website to determine who is entitled to act as the administrator of the deceased’s estate. There is a priority list, with spouses and civil partners being at the top. The previously linked blog includes more information about this list.

Why you need a Notary Public

There are a few things we can do at Woodcock Notary Public to help you if you plan on using your Grant of Letters of Administration abroad.

Our experienced Notary Public, Nathan Woodcock, can notarise your document for you. Your appointment can be at any of our offices.

Furthermore, we can help you get an apostille for your document so you can use it overseas. We do this by working closely with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. We have a standard apostille service that takes 10 to 15 days, or a fast-track service that takes 5 to 7 days. You can choose whichever one suits your required timescale the most.

For the few countries that do not accept apostilles, we can instead assist you with embassy legalisation. We will work with the embassy and consulate of the country you wish to go to, so as to ensure that your documents are legalised in a timely manner.

If you need help and want to use our Grant of Letters of Administration services to get your document ready to be used overseas, then get in touch with us today.
