Why you might need to get your Marriage Certificate legalised
Those who plan on using their Marriage Certificate in other countries will need to get their certificate legalised.
If you do not get it legalised, then the country you want to go to will not accept it as a genuine certificate.
Please note that while you do need to get your Marriage Certificate legalised, you do not need to get it notarised. This is because all certificates issued by the General Registry Office (GRO) are already classed as valid and certified.
How do I get my Marriage Certificate legalised?
There are two different ways to ensure that your Marriage Certificate can be used overseas. Depending on where you want to go, there are different processes.
For one of the 124 other countries that are signatories of the Apostille Convention, you will need to apply for an apostille from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). This is something that we can assist with.
If you are planning on going to a country that does accept apostilles, then you will need to go through the lengthier embassy legalisation process. For example, if you want to go to the UAE.
