Portugal visa applications

Portugal has been growing in popularity as a long-term option for expats, particularly with digital nomads and travelling entrepreneurs. There are a number of visas available to UK nationals, including the D7 Visa.

We provide help to those wishing to apply for Portuguese visas, giving them the best possible chance of having their applications accepted.

Portuguese visa routes

There are many Portuguese visa routes open to UK nationals. Here is one of the most popular:

D7 Visa

The D7 Visa, introduced by the Portuguese government in 2007, is also known as the Retirement Visa or Passive Income Visa. It is mainly popular amongst digital nomads, entrepreneurs, and pensioners seeking a life on the continent.

Required documentation

To satisfy Portuguese authorities that you are eligible for a particular visa, you may be required to provide them with a number of different documents. These may include:

Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF) is an individual tax identification number in Portugal. It is also known as the Contribution Number (Número de Contribuinte). The nine-digit number is issued by Portuguese tax authorities. We assist individuals in applying for their NIF numbers.

You may be asked to set up a bank account with a Portuguese bank before your application is accepted, particularly for the Golden Visa. This is due to the investment requirements of the route. We can assist applicants in setting up foreign bank accounts.

‘True copies’ of documents are those that have been witnessed by an authorised official, such as a Notary Public. You may need to have true copies taken if you are asked to send your passport or birth certificate to Portugal – perhaps to set up a bank account. Instead of posting your original documents, true copies can be sent instead, with reduced risk of loss or damage.

If you intend to apply for a Portugal visa application which would allow you to work in Portugal, it is advisable that you get your degree (and other important qualifications) authenticated. This proves to Portuguese authorities that your degree certificate is genuine. Find out more about degree authentication.

Key services you may need for your Portugal visa application

Notarisation
A Notary Public is authorised to certify documents for use in foreign jurisdictions, including Portugal. The process requires you to meet with a Notary Public. They will sign and seal your documents, certifying them as genuine. We have a webpage where you can learn more about what a Notary Public is.

Legalisation
Legalisation is a process whereby the signature and seal of an authorised official (including those of a Notary Public) are checked by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The FCDO confirms that the signee is an authorised official and will then issue the document with an apostille. An apostille is a certificate, authenticating that it can be accepted by foreign authorities. You can find out more about apostilles and legalisation our on website.
