What is a Portuguese Golden Visa?

The Portuguese Golden Visa is granted to overseas nationals who make a substantial financial contribution to the country. It best suits people who have large amounts of disposable capital and have the desire to set up a life in Portugal.

Why would you want a Golden Visa?

People who hold a Golden Visa are able to live, work and study in Portugal. They are also able to bring over family members, who will be able to enjoy the same rights and privileges. Furthermore, the Golden Visa can be used as a path to full Portuguese citizenship, which makes it more attractive to those wanting a fresh start in Europe.

What are the requirements?

Portugal’s Golden Visa scheme remains a popular choice for British nationals due to the range of ways in which the requirements can be met. Like all Golden Visas across the world, acquiring the visa requires a substantial financial investment in the country.

The various categories, as well as their thresholds, are listed below:

  • Invest €500,000 in Real Estate (this threshold is 400,000 euros in low-density areas)
  • Establish a company in Portugal and create at least 10 jobs
  • Donate €250,000 to Portuguese Cultural Heritage
  • Transfer €1,500,000 into a Portuguese Bank
  • Invest €350,000 in Portuguese Research & Development

What happens when you get your visa?

After you have reached the investment threshold and made your investment in your chosen category, you will need to gather all necessary documents for the Golden Visa application. We can talk you through the steps and assist in submitting your application to the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF).

After approval, you will need to submit your biometric information. After this, you will  be issued with your residence card. The five year period you have in Portugal begins on the date stipulated on the card.
